In late 2003 we added a feature to the Instant Inquiry that allows you to cast a very wide net when looking for criminal records. It is called the National Criminal Index, or NCI for short. Contained in this database are an ever growing number of criminal files from around the nation. It currently contains nearly 200 million criminal records from 46 states.
The NCI search option was created at the request of our users who wanted to be able to view criminal records from other states, even when they didn’t know an address in that state. Sometimes this is due to incomplete information on the application form, and sometimes it is because we identified former addresses in states not mentioned by your applicant.
Criminals know that if they remain in a state where they have been convicted of a crime, it is usually pretty easy for employers and landlords to find out their history. They also know that by simply moving to another state that people may find it rather difficult to discover their past. The NCI search is a tremendous tool that closes the gap on people that move from state to state in order to hide their problem past.
Every Internet Instant Inquiry includes a search of our entire 43 state database of sex offenders. Now you have the ability to cast a very wide net for criminal histories as well. To order a complete NCI search you must be viewing an Instant Inquiry report online. When you are looking at the Criminal Summary Information you will see a link to ORDER COMPLETE NCI SEARCH. Once initiated, your report will be updated with all criminal records found to be linked to your applicant, and it only takes about 30 seconds for this update to appear.
This is real power when it comes to discovering criminal histories. If you suspect that your applicant has not been truthful when providing prior addresses, it may be time to click on the link for a complete NCI search.

Instant Inquiry is a very powerful screening tool all by itself. Each Internet Instant Inquiry you submit includes up to three states of statewide criminal histories and eviction records (in addition to a whole lot more). In order to have these three states of history show on your report you will need to supply addresses that your applicant lived at in the three states. We provide fields for this within the Instant Inquiry submission form. The first address field is for the current place of residence, and there are two fields for prior addresses.
If your applicant has supplied several prior addresses, the best thing to do would be to pick the addresses that are in other states, even if they are older addresses. Instant Inquiry will only search a given state for you if the address field contains an address for that state.
If the applicant is evasive about prior addresses, or simply can’t remember...it’s time to order a National Criminal Index (NCI) search. |
